Man killed in train accident

The tragedy comes amid growing concerns about an increase in level crossing accidents.

RUSAPE, Mar 22 (NewsDay Live) – A young man was hit and killed by a train in Rusape on Saturday, the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has said.

Without giving details, the parastatal said the man, whose age was not given, was rushed to a hospital in Rusape, before being transferred to Mutare General Hospital.

He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital from his injuries.

"We express our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. May the lord comfort them in this difficult moment,” the NRZ said in the statement.

"Meanwhile we urge the public to exercise extreme caution on and around railway tracks to avoid accidents.

The tragedy comes amid growing concerns about an increase in level crossing accidents.

In the past few days, two similar accidents have been reported. On Thursday, a couple was injured when their car was struck by a locomotive at the Chiredzi-Triangle Road crossing.

In another incident, a vehicle failed to stop at the Amtec level crossing in Gweru and was hit by a train. No injuries were reported.
