Human rights activists court hearing: State witness in no show

HARARE magistrate Rufaro Panavanhu yesterday postponed the trial of three civic society leaders after the State witness failed to show up.

HARARE magistrate Rufaro Panavanhu yesterday postponed the trial of three civic society leaders after the State witness failed to show up.

Donald Chingarafa, who is the arresting officer from the CID Law and Order, was then issued with a warrant of arrest.

Namatai Kwekweza, Robson Chere and Samuel Gwenzi are facing allegations of protesting outside the Harare Magistrates Court against the arrest and continued detention of Jameson Timba and other opposition Citizens Coalition for Change activists.

In an earlier appearance last year, the trio, who were yanked off a Victoria Falls-bound flight at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, were repeatedly denied bail and later released by the High Court as the State argued that the activists were likely to abscond, commit other offences or cause public despondency.

The three claimed that they were held incommunicado and tortured for several hours following their dramatic arrest at the airport.
