HARARE, Feb 19 (NewsDay Live) - The European Union (EU) has extended its restrictive measures on Zimbabwe by another year citing continued violation of human rights, but delisted the country’s now largely dormant military hardware manufacturer - Zimbabwe Defence Industries (ZDI).
“The EU continues to closely follow developments in Zimbabwe, with a particular attention to the human rights situation, and recalls its readiness to adapt the whole range of its policies accordingly,” the bloc said in a statement Wednesday.
The EU imposed the restrictive measures on Harare in February 2011 following a surge in human rights violations, as well as violations of the freedom of opinion, freedom of association and freedom of peaceful assembly.
The sanctions included an arms embargo as well as travel and financial sanctions on targeted government officials and entities.
The embargo has been regularly extended, with the Zanu PF-led government blaming it for the current economic squeeze.
