NATIONAL Assembly Speaker Jacob Mudenda has underscored the crucial role of parliamentary staff in maintaining checks and balances to ensure effective and transparent operations.
Officially opening the 2025 Annual Corporate Planning Workshop for Parliament staff on Friday last week, Mudenda underscored the need for accountability within the operations in the House.
The workshop, which ends tomorrow, was aimed at strategising and enhancing the efficiency and transparency of parliamentary functions.
“Accountability ensures that all parliamentary actions are visible and understandable, thereby fostering integrity,” Mudenda said, calling on the staff to recognise their pivotal position as both members and technical officials in promoting accountability.
“Let me remind you that accountability is not just a political responsibility but a fundamental duty of parliamentary staff.
He said accountability should serve as the cornerstone of parliamentary operations, influencing resource allocation and utilisation.
“You must play a central role in the passing of key Bills, such as the Appropriation and Finance Bills and in unlocking Treasury funds. Thus, accountability should be at the core of your operations,” Mudenda said.
The workshop, attended by staff within the parliamentary framework, was also aimed at cultivating a culture of transparency and efficiency while ensuring parliamentary activities are conducted with the highest standards of integrity.
