Beitbridge bus disaster: 22 Bodies Identified

A couple, Abel Rumbwere and his wife Petronella Murunguni of Beitbridge were on the bus and both died.

Beitbridge (NewsDay Live), Feb 15 - TWENTY-TWO of the 25 people who perished in Beitbridge's horrific crash on Thursday have since been identified and have started collecting burial remains of their loved ones who included a couple.

A couple, Abel Rumbwere and his wife Petronella Murunguni of Beitbridge were on the bus and both died.

The Doves Funeral Parlour at Beitbridge was a hive of activity on Saturday as relatives left for different parts of the country to lay their loved ones to rest.

By lunch yesterday 12 bodies had been collected.

Acting head of the Beitbridge Civil Protection Unit Jahson Mugodzwa said they had disbursed $350 for every deceased person.

"We have disbursed that amount so far from the $11 000 donation announced yesterday. So far we have also had 21 burial orders processed," said Mugodzwa.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared the accident a national disaster, with government covering burial costs.

The ill-fated Urban Connect bus on an overnight trip from Harare to Beitbridge collided with a haulage truck 26 kilometres from its destination killing 17 on the spot while eight others, including the truck driver died at Beitbridge hospital.

Lawyer Jabulani Mzinyathi, Chicken Inn, businessmen Maxwell Ngwenya and Felix Venge donated food and fuel towards the disaster which has plunged Beitbridge into mourning.

A number of people from Beitbridge, mostly in the shipping industry, were among the deceased and the border town is having several burials.
