A 55-YEAR-OLD self-proclaimed prophet from Chief Nyajina area in Uzumba has been denied bail in a case where he is being accused of raping a member of his church.
The suspect appeared at the Murewa Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody to February 17.
Allegations are that in May 2023, the suspect approached the complainant claiming that he had prophesied that she had fertility issues.
He asked her to visit him for prayers. Two weeks later, the complainant visited the self-proclaimed prophet in fulfilment of his invitation.
On the third day, he asked her to wake up at midnight for a prayer.
The suspect told her that she had an unknown object in the womb that could only be removed through being intimate with him.
He threatened her with death if she failed to comply, before raping her.
The matter came to light on February 1 this year when the suspect told the complainant’s husband that he should advise his wife to return to his shrine for night prayers.
