Mbembesi man jailed 10 years for attempted rape

Mali had pleaded not guilty but Mabeza found guilty.

A 31-YEAR-OLD man from Mazizini village in Mbembesi has been jailed for 10 years for attempting to rape a 49-year-old woman.

Mgcini Mali appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza facing a charge of attempted rape.

Mali had pleaded not guilty but Mabeza found guilty.

“Attempting to rape is also treated like rape in sentencing hence you are sentenced to 10 years imprisonment,” he said.

The court was told that on March 7, 2023, Mali approached the complainant who was washing clothes in Qobintethe River in Mazizini village and asked to be intimate with her.

The complainant refused and Mali forcibly grabbed her by the neck and throttled her

while lowering his pair of trousers.

Mali threatened to kill the complainant while trying to remove her pants but failed.

He heard the voices of children who were running to the river and fled.

A report was made to the police leading to his arrest.
