AMH announces editorial changes at ZimInd

ZimInd assistant editor Mthandazo Nyoni

ALPHA Media Holdings (AMH) this week announced senior editorial changes at the Zimbabwe Independent (ZimInd).

Assistant editor Shame Makoshori has been promoted to deputy editor.

He will be succeeded as assistant editor by group business editor Mthandazo Nyoni, while deputy group business editor Tatira Zwinoira has stepped into Nyoni’s former role.

Chief reporter Tinashe Kairiza has been elevated to deputy news editor, with senior business reporter Melody Chikono taking over as chief reporter.

Makoshori brings a wealth of experience  to  his  new role. Having served as AMH’s group business editor between 2020 and 2022, he transitioned to assistant editor in 2023.

His journalism career began in 2003 at the Daily Mirror after earning a Diploma in Journalism from the Christian College of Southern Africa in 2002. Makoshori joined ZimInd in 2006 and later moved to the Financial Gazette, where he held roles ranging from business reporter to companies editor. He is a decorated journalist with numerous accolades, including Investigative Journalist of the Year, Business Journalist of the Year (twice), and Financial Journalist of the Year, among many others.

Nyoni, a seasoned journalist passionate about economic justice and data-driven storytelling, takes over as assistant editor. He holds an Honours degree in Journalism and Media Studies from the National University of Science and Technology. Nyoni began his career with AMH in 2013, covering the southern region of Zimbabwe before transferring to Harare in 2022.

His exceptional work earned him a promotion to group business editor in 2023, a position he held until this latest appointment.

Award-winning journalist Tinashe Kairiza steps into the role of deputy news editor. With a career spanning over a decade, Kairiza is recognised for his investigative work promoting governance accountability and exposing illicit financial flows.

A founding committee member of the Zimbabwe Investigative Journalists Network, he has collaborated with regional and international peers on cross-border investigative projects.  Kairiza joined ZimInd as a business reporter in 2017 and steadily rose through the ranks to deputy news editor.

Zwinoira is a respected journalist with nearly a decade of experience. Joining AMH in 2015, Zwinoira has reported on high-profile regional and international conferences across South Africa, Togo, India, Zambia, Ethiopia, and the United States.

A 2019 Mandela Washington Fellowship finalist, Zwinoira has also appeared as a guest analyst on platforms such as PBS Newshour (USA), Channel News Five (UK), and SABC Radio (South Africa).

Chikono takes up the role of chief reporter. With over 12 years of experience as a business journalist, Chikono has been instrumental in editing AMH’s flagship publications, including Banks and Banking and Quoted Companies, since 2019.  She is the chairperson of the Women in News Zimbabwe Chapter, where she advocates for gender equality in the media, and serves as the welfare and training officer for the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists.

Chikono holds a Master’s degree in Strategic Communication Studies, a Postgraduate Diploma in Media and Society Studies, a BA in Media Studies, and a Diploma in Public Relations.

The changes reflect AMH’s commitment to fostering leadership within its editorial team and enhancing its journalistic output.

“These appointments represent a significant milestone for Zimbabwe Independent and Alpha Media Holdings as a whole,” the ZimInd editor, Faith Zaba said.

“We are strengthening our editorial team with seasoned journalists who have consistently demonstrated excellence, innovation, and a commitment to delivering high-quality journalism.

“Their expertise, coupled with their deep understanding of the local and global business landscape, positions us to elevate our content to even greater heights.”

She added: “As we move forward, our focus remains on producing insightful, data-driven, and impactful reporting that resonates with our audience.”

The new leadership team will be pivotal in driving this vision to meet the evolving needs of our readers.”
