INVESTORS have approached Kariba Municipality to boost development in the resort town, NewsDay has established.
The investors, which include Masawara and Herentals Group of Colleges, are seeking land for various projects.
This has forced council to take a proactive approach by initiating the formulation of the Kariba master plan, a comprehensive blueprint that will guide the development and growth of the town for years to come. Council is also calling on residents to actively participate in the formulation process of the master plan.
It has also organised a series of stakeholder consultations to provide a platform for community members, businesses, organisations and government representatives to come together and share their visions, concerns and suggestions.
In an interview recently, Municipality of Kariba financial services director Saratiyere Chitenhe said council was hoping to foster a sense of ownership and promote inclusivity through open dialogue, brainstorming sessions and interactive workshops.
“We have applications from bigger tourist operators like Masawara, who need bigger portions of land. We also need to move our current airport to Charara area and under council, we have Herentals which wants land to operate schools and colleges,” he said.
“The formulation of the Kariba master plan aims to address a wide range of areas that are vital to the community’s well-being.
“It will encompass urban planning, infrastructural development, economic growth, environmental sustainability, social services and cultural preservation.”

Chitenhe said by adopting a holistic approach, the municipality was seeking to create a harmonious and prosperous future for the resort town.
“The significance of community participation in this process cannot be overstated. Each resident brings a unique perspective and experiences that can contribute to the comprehensive development of the master plan.
“The municipality encourages the community to actively engage in the consultations, attend public meetings and provide their valuable insights. By doing so, they actively shape their own future and ensure that their voices are heard,” he said.
The formulation of the Kariba master plan heralds a new chapter in the municipality’s history and provides an opportunity for the residents to take ownership of their future and envision a town that thrives economically, socially and environmentally.
