THE 14 opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activists who were arrested last year for public violence in Nyatsime, Chitungwiza, yesterday challenged their placement on further remand when they appeared before Harare magistrate Ethel Chichera.
They are being represented by rights lawyers Noble Chinhanu and Tapiwa Muchineripi.
The activists were arrested in connection with political violence at the funeral wake of murdered opposition activist, Moreblessing Ali in June last year.
They were further remanded out of custody to October 25 when Chichera is expected to make a ruling on the application.
Prosecutor Tinotenda Masimba told the court that on June 14 last year, the activists in the company of three other accomplices, who are also on remand, conspired to engage in violence to avenge Ali’s murder.
It is alleged that they used their vehicles to transport people from different locations to Nyatsime where they later engaged in public violence targeting property belonging to Zanu PF supporters.
It is further alleged that they proceeded to Chibhanguza Shopping Centre where they torched a gazebo, damaged windows at 13 shops and four beerhalls before looting groceries and electrical gadgets.
