Zim accountants to benefit from ESG training initiative

Icaz education manager Hope Mhindu

THE Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (Icaz) has partnered Bright Africa Consultancy Training to offer a three-month course on environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting.

Globally, prospective investors are increasingly withholding investment from companies that fail to demonstrate active implementation of ESG practices.

This trend has prompted local firms to adopt ESG policies, particularly as local capital becomes scarce, forcing accountants to adapt.

“Icaz has partnered Bight Africa to offer a three-month ESG course designed for professionals who are seeking to enhance their understanding of sustainability and ESG reporting,” Icaz education manager Hope Mhindu told NewsDay Business.

“This course will cover key topics such as ESG Reporting Framework and Standards Concepts, the International Sustainability Standards Board, Global Reporting Initiative, Sustainability Accounting Standards Board, and Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures, Sustainability Strategy and Reporting Processes.”

According to Mhindu, Icaz was firmly committed to supporting organisations as they transitioned towards integrated ESG reporting aligned with global standards.

“With increasing investor demand for transparent sustainability disclosures, Icaz recognises the critical importance of providing relevant training, guidance, and resources to help Zimbabwean companies align with international frameworks and meet stakeholder expectations,” she said.

Mhindu added that the institute continued to foster a global ESG framework through educational initiatives, certification courses and webinars aimed at strengthening capacity across all sectors.

“The course aims to equip professionals with the skills necessary to navigate the complex landscape of ESG, helping them to effectively communicate an organisation’s sustainability initiatives and align with both global and local regulatory requirements,” she said.

Icaz, in collaboration with Training and Advisory Services, is offering training on International Financial Reporting Standards Sustainability (IFRS S), an essential component of the IFRS Foundation’s sustainability standards.

“As IFRS S becomes increasingly crucial in financial and sustainability reporting, this course will provide valuable insights into how the international standard integrates with financial reporting, helping businesses enhance transparency and accountability in their sustainability practices,” Mhindu said.

Icaz highlighted two key initiatives currently in progress to build a solid foundation for sustainability reporting across Zimbabwe.

“The coming year emphasises a continued focus on the adoption of globally recognised ESG frameworks,” Mhindu said.

“Icaz is well positioned to support organisations through educational initiatives, certification courses and webinars aimed at strengthening ESG capacity across all sectors.”

Icaz said 2025 reflected the growing importance of sustainability reporting and the need for robust frameworks to guide companies through this evolving landscape.

According to Icaz, Zimbabwe’s current economic environment is increasingly shaped by ESG considerations, with a growing emphasis on corporate responsibility and sustainability practices.

Bright Africa, a locally-based business school, aims to become a centre of excellence among the continent’s business and finance schools.
