THE government this week launched the Brand Zimbabwe campaign, designed to enhance the country’s domestic and international appeal to investors and tourists.
The price of bread in Zimbabwe has soared to more than US$1 a loaf since Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February. This price is beyond the general public’s reach.
The global lender said Zimbabwe’s aggregate food inflation stood at 321% during the period, a notable leap ahead of second placed Lebanon, whose rate was estimated at 208%.
Both Mozambique and Madagascar put in place preparatory measures before the cyclone hit. In Madagascar, more than 7 000 people were moved to shelters and schools were closed.
Yet, violence has overarching repercussions. It damages the image of the country. The “Brand Zimbabwe” and other initiatives will come to nought if violence is not tamed.
The post-election period is also critical. I want to conclude by quoting Mugabe’s acceptance speech on April 18 1980; never mind he did not stand by it.
The government cannot afford to miss this opportunity to show the world that it is committed to implementing the necessary reforms that ensure that the polls are free and fair.
Prices of medical drugs and health care continue to increase at an astronomical rate. This has pushed basic medical care beyond the reach of most ordinary Zimbabweans.
