Early sweet potato planting urged amidst short rains and seed shortages

Zimsweet Potato Pvt Ltd Managing Director, Samuel Makuvire, has urged sweet potato farmers to commence planting early due to the anticipated short rain season in Zimbabwe, exacerbated by a shortage of quality sweet potato seeds.

“The combination of a short rain season and a shortage of seeds poses significant challenges to sweet potato production. Early planting can mitigate the impact of these factors and optimize yields,” he said.

To address the seed shortage, Makuvire highlighted that Zimsweet Potato Pvt Ltd has a wide range of high-quality sweet potato varieties, including Germany 2, Chingovha, Covington, Alisha, and Georgia Jet.

“These varieties are known for their high yields, disease resistance, and excellent taste.

“We urge farmers to source their seeds from reputable suppliers to ensure optimal plant health and productivity,” Makuvire said.

He also reiterated the importance of cultivating drought-resistant varieties, such as Alisha.

“Alisha is a high-yielding variety that is well-adapted to Zimbabwe’s climatic conditions. It is particularly resilient to drought stress and can thrive in marginal areas.

“Sweet potatoes are a nutritional powerhouse, rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They are an excellent source of beta-carotene, which our bodies convert into vitamin A, crucial for healthy vision and immune function,” he added.

Zimsweet Potato Pvt Ltd remains committed to supporting local farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture practices. By encouraging early planting, the adoption of drought-resistant varieties, and providing access to quality seeds, the company aims to contribute to food security and improved livelihoods in Zimbabwe.
