Footgolfers impress at Byo tourney

Footgolfers.

THE Harry Allen Golf Club was a hive of activity over the weekend, as 66 footgolfers from across Zimbabwe competed in the highly anticipated national footgolf tournament.

The two-day showdown concluded with 24 participants earning medals and a chance to represent the country in the upcoming Victoria Falls regional competition.

The national footgolf tournament, which served as a crucial qualifier for the regional event slated for November 20 to 25, saw an impressive turnout that exceeded the expectations of organisers.

Daniel Kuwengwa, president of the Zimbabwe Footgolf Association, expressed his delight with the event's success. “The tournament was a huge success and surpassed our expectations in terms of the number of participants and the quality of play,” he said.

Medals were awarded to winners across three categories: juniors, seniors and seniors plus, showcasing the sport's appeal to a wide range of ages and skill levels.

Footgolf is a unique hybrid sport that combines the rules of golf with the mechanics of football. Participants kick a football into an oversized cup on a golf course, aiming to complete the course in as few shots as possible. The sport requires precision, strategy and a powerful kick, making it a thrilling and challenging game.

The "footgolf cup" is significantly larger than a traditional golf hole, measuring 50 to 52cm in diameter and 28cm deep, and is strategically placed to avoid interference with the traditional golf greens.

Looking ahead to the regional tournament, Kuwengwa is calling on local businesses and philanthropists to lend their support.

He emphasised the importance of sponsoring the national team, noting that hosting the regional event in Victoria Falls presented an opportunity to promote both the sport and the country.

“I appeal to Zimbabwe to support our footgolfers in all respects as we get ready to brand Zimbabwe by hosting several countries later this year," he said.

Kuwengwa believes that embracing footgolf as a legitimate sport can contribute positively to the country's development.

“We ask Zimbabweans to embrace this new sport in their various sectors to help achieve a better Zimbabwe through footgolf,” he added.

As the host nation for the regional tournament, Zimbabwe has the unique opportunity to field as many players as available slots allow, a chance that the Footgolf Association hopes to maximise with the support of the community.
