Herentals Queens must be ruthless: Bvunzawabaya

HERENTALS Queens

HERENTALS Queens’ fate in the CAF Women’s Champions League Cosafa qualifier is still in their own hands, but the path to the semifinals is a difficult one.

The Zimbabwean champions should secure a decisive victory against Comoros’ Olympic de Moroni today, winning by at least a five-goal margin to advance as the best-placed runners-up.

After a disappointing 2-0 opening defeat to Costa do Sol of Mozambique, the mood in the camp has shifted from regret to determination.

Striker Elizabeth Bvunzawabaya encapsulated this newfound resolve, stating: “We know what needs to be done and the good thing is it will all come down to us.

“We messed up in the first game but we are not a team to cry over things we no longer have control over.”

Bvunzawabaya’s fighting words reflect the team’s strategy — an all-out offensive play.

She emphasised the need for a relentless attack, saying: “We can only do well in the match against Olympic de Moroni and get going.

“We should be relentless and spray bullets all over their goal and see what happens.”

This aggressive mindset is a direct response to their current predicament, as a simple win won’t be enough.

Their progression hinges on a significant goal difference, a consequence of the complex group stage results across the tournament.

The team received a morale boost with the arrival of club president Innocent Benza yesterday in Johannesburg and a donation from South Africa-based company Zororo-Phumulani, which provided goodies worth 15 000 rand.

Company representative Tendai Mangoti said: “We hope that this gesture will inspire the queens to put in the shift and do what ought to be done to nail a semi-final berth.”

With the stage set for a high stakes final group match, the “Student Queens” have been training with renewed intensity.

Olympic de Moroni can advance with a win of any margin, making them a formidable opponent despite their earlier draw.

Meanwhile, Herentals Queens should outperform other second-placed teams in Groups A and B in terms of goal difference.

The team have vowed that they are physically and mentally prepared for the challenge, knowing that only a dominant performance will secure their spot in the next round.

The match kicks off at 3pm at the AW Muller Stadium, with Herentals Queens carrying the hopes of their nation on their shoulders.
