WARRIORS head coach Michael Nees has paid tribute to midfielder Brian Banda, who passed away in a road traffic accident on Sunday.
The accident occurred along the Zvishavane-Bulawayo Highway, just a day after he had watched his FC Platinum teammates in their 1-1 draw against defending champions Simba Bhora at Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane, as he was out injured.
Details of his burial remain sketchy, but mourners are gathered at 7550 Caravan in Cowdray Park, Bulawayo.
Banda, aged 29, was part of the national team squad and also a highly celebrated midfielder in the local Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.
“Brian’s presence in the Warriors squad was always felt, not just through his talent, but through his discipline, his work ethic, and his respect for the badge,” Nees said in a statement released by Zifa yesterday.
“This is a painful loss for all of us who had the honour of working with him.”
ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi described Banda as a remarkable footballer and humble leader.
“We are devastated by the loss of Brian Banda. He was a remarkable footballer and a humble leader, both on and off the field,” he said.
