Zimbabwe Agriculture Society defrauded US$31K

The suspect Simbarashe Chiringa (33) appeared before Harare magistrate Apollonia Marutya on Friday and was remanded out of custody to February 28.

A Harare man allegedly defrauded the Zimbabwe Agriculture Society (ZAS) over US$31 000 on separate occasions.

The suspect Simbarashe Chiringa (33) appeared before Harare magistrate Apollonia Marutya on Friday and was remanded out of custody to February 28.

It is alleged that on January 23 2025, ZAS received correspondence from Smart Electricity Private to the effect that they should verify receipts numbers 72193 and 72190 from one of their tenants. Ethical Solutions Private Limited. dated January 18, 2025.

Court papers report that ZAS had subcontracted Smart Electricity Private Limited to manage its properties and issue electricity tokens to the tenants.

Upon verification of the receipts, it was noticed that the receipts were fake and did not emanate from the ZAS official receipt books.

Investigations revealed that Chiringa was pocketing the money and producing the fake receipts.
