Gweru mayor calls for residents participation in budget consultations

GWERU mayor Martin Chivhoko has called on residents to actively participate in the 2026 budget consultations to help the city fathers to formulate a people-centred budget.

GWERU mayor Martin Chivhoko has called on residents to actively participate in the 2026 budget consultations to help the city fathers to formulate a people-centred budget.

Speaking at an ordinary council meeting recently, Chivhoko said residents usually complained after the budget had been approved, yet they would not have contributed during budget consultations.

“I encourage all residents to participate in the budget consultative meetings, where your input will be invaluable in shaping our city’s future,” he said.

“As we move forward, I expect residents to engage actively in shaping our city’s future.

“Let us work hand-in-hand to make our city a better place for all, where everyone has access to opportunities, services and amenities that enhance their quality of life.”

Chivhoko said council would prioritise infrastructural development, maintain roads, community facilities and enhance public services to ensure that residents have access to quality healthcare and social services.

“We will promote economic growth supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs as well as attracting investment to our city,” he said.

Meanwhile, Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association director Cornelia Selipiwe said residents should utilise budget consultations to make meaningful contributions on key service delivery issues.

“As residents, let us take advantage of the open invitation by the city fathers and make relevant and meaningful contributions during the 2026 Gweru City Council budget consultations so that priority service delivery issues are addressed,” Selipiwe said.

“We should not miss out during the budget formulation process by concentrating on irrelevant personal matters that have nothing to do with service delivery.

“If we say, for example, health, education and water provision are key service delivery issues that need urgent attention let us be clear on that.”

Selipiwe urged youths, who usually shun budget consultative meetings, to attend in their numbers and make pertinent contributions to the 2026 budget.
