Trio sentenced to 3 years each for attempted murder

THREE men from Matabeleland South province were recently sentenced to three years in prison each for attempted murder.

Bruce Moyo (23) from Gwanda, Aron Ndlovu (25) and Ezra Mpofu (22), both from Insiza, who attacked a Freda mine worker, pleaded guilty when they appeared before Gwanda magistrate Sithembiso Ndebele.

They were sentenced to an effective three years each.

Prosecutor Ngonidzashe Shumba told the court the three attacked Sifelani Siziba (28) with the intention to kill him, thereby rendering them candidates for an attempted murder charge.

The court was told that on June 19 this year at Kwashira claim, Freda Mine in Gwanda, Siziba, who works as a general miner, was returning from fetching water when the accused and their six accomplices, who are still at large, confronted him demanding to know who he was.

Moyo struck Siziba with a knobkerrie on the head, while Ndlovu and Mpofu kicked him.

The trio’s accomplices joined in the assault.

Siziba was stabbed on the left side of the chest and on the left thigh.

He, however, survived the assault and was rushed to Gwanda Provincial Hospital, where he was treated for stab wounds.

A police report was made, leading to the arrest of the three.
