A FISHERMAN from Nyaodza Fishing Camp died on Friday after a boat he was using to set nets with a colleague capsized due to strong winds.

The accident happened around 5pm but the colleague survived the ordeal. The deceased’s body was retrieved and taken to Kariba District Hospital for post-mortem.

Lake Captain Adan Nyekete of the Department of Inland Waters Control had warned fishermen operating on the lake to exercise caution, especially during periods of strong winds.

“Fishermen should always check the weather forecast before venturing onto the lake and should not take unnecessary risks,” he said.

Nyekete said fishermen should follow Lake Kariba’s standard operating procedures.

“They should always adhere to all safety precautions to avoid fatalities,” he said.

There have been several tragic incidents on the lake, including the 2019 capsizing of a fishing boat that resulted in multiple fatalities and a 2022 incident where a fisherman was killed by a crocodile.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, reports have emerged that elephants have destroyed the electric security fence at Gache-Gache fishing camp, exposing the community to wildlife.

Gache-Gache fishing camp chairperson, Tichaona Manzungu, said the elephants not only destroyed the fence but also damaged houses in the area.

“We are now vulnerable to attacks by wildlife such as lions and hyenas that have started venturing into our community,” he said.
