Kariba woman loses hand in attack by hyena

HARARE, March 10, (NewsDayLive)-A woman from Quarry area in rural Kariba is lucky to be alive after she was attacked by a hyena while sleeping in the open at her homestead on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred around 7pm when Stella Muzambi was at her homestead at the periphery of the village.

According to eyewitnesses, the same hyena had been spotted at a nearby shop earlier on , and was chased away by villagers.

The hyena then fled towards Muzambi's homstead where it found her sleeping outside.

It dragged her for several metres before villagers came to her rescue but not before it had inflicted severe injuries on her, severing her right hand.

Muzambi was initially taken to Nyamhunga Clinic before she was transferred to Kariba District Hospital, and eventually to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital.

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) has warned communities living near wildlife habitats to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent such attacks.

However, many residents in these areas lack access to secure housing and are forced to sleep outdoors, especially during the hot summer months when temperatures soar.
