Building narratives: Career Fiesta to host 2022 Harare expo

The event, which is expected to attract 40 schools and 5 000 students, parents, guardians and teachers, seeks to provide exposure to ordinary and advanced level from schools in Harare on the various careers and paths available thereby enabling them to make informed decision in the future.

By Fungayi Sox Career Fiesta — a human capital development consultancy with a passion for youth empowerment and capacity building is preparing to host the 2022 Career Expo at the Avondale Swimming Pool on September 16 and 17.

The event, which is expected to attract 40 schools and 5 000 students, parents, guardians and teachers, seeks to provide exposure to ordinary and advanced level from schools in Harare on the various careers and paths available thereby enabling them to make informed decision in the future.

The organisation has been active in the youth development spheres offering trainings and talks in organisations such as Toastmasters International, Junior Chamber International and the Rotaract Club.

In a statement Career Fiesta said the 2022 Expo was being held in partnership with the ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development and the Harare City Council.

Career Fiesta has so far organised two career fairs in 2021 with the recent one held in March this year at the Marchwood Senior School attracting over a thousand students from the Norton school clusters.

Organisations that exhibited in the past include Association of Certified Chartered Accountants(ACCA), Chinhoyi University of Science and Technology (CUT), Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ), Real Estate Institute of Zimbabwe (REIZ) as well as the Insurance and Pensions Commission (IPEC) amongst others.

According to the ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Zimbabwe’s knowledge sector, dominated by state universities, should be seized with the practicalities of this exciting development.”

“In brief, Zimbabwe’s state universities’ traditional tripartite mission of teaching, research and community service has been revised to align to the urgent national ambition to attain middle income status by year 2030,” said the ministry.

“It is now demanded of the nation’s higher and tertiary education sector to not only: (1) teach, (2) research and (3) community serve but (4) innovate and (5) industrialise Zimbabwe.

“Under Education 5.0, Zimbabwe’s state universities must launch into outcomes-focused national development activities towards a competitive, modern and industrialised Zimbabwe. It is now all about problem-solving for value-creation.”

Event organiser Mubu Delorne Mubu stated that “the event would provide a strong and cost-effective platform for providers of tertiary education to introduce their institutions so as to take a large pool of potential students as well as providing a platform where employers would interact with students and provide mentorship on skills and careers on demand”.

The event which is also expected to attract 40 Exhibitors is in line with Sustainable Development Goal Number 4 which speaks to ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education through promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Targeted exhibitors include universities and polytechnics, training institutions, professional bodies, government ministries and departments, among others.

With Zimbabwe’s unemployment rate hovering around 90%, there has been a huge and widening disconnect between a seemingly obsolete curriculum coupled with lack of literacy and awareness by students in as far as career guidance and their future work is concerned.

The upcoming Expo is expected to be a game changer in creating and providing much needed guidance especially to high school students.

Targeted exhibitors include universities and polytechnics, training institutions, professional bodies, government ministries and departments, among others.
