Zim women face Zambia in CAVB Africa Qualifier dress rehearsal

Opposite hitter Nyengeterai Guyo said the team would test their systems against the Zambians now, so that they are sharper when it matters.

ZIMBABWE’S women volleyball team will treat this morning’s Four Nations CAVB Zone VI Africa Qualifier round-robin clash against Zambia at Sunrise Sports Club as a dress rehearsal for Saturday’s final, with Los Angeles 2028 Olympic qualification at stake.

Both sides secured their final berths yesterday with identical 3-0 wins. The host ladies thrashed Malawi, while Zambia brushed aside Namibia. Today’s last round-robin match now becomes a tactical preview before they meet again for gold and a step closer to LA28.

Opposite hitter Nyengeterai Guyo said the team would test their systems against the Zambians now, so that they are sharper when it matters.

“It’s a dress rehearsal for us. We know Zambia will be in the final for LA28 qualification, so this morning is about our serve, our block and our composure,” Guyo told NewsDay Sport.

“We beat Malawi 3-0 yesterday and confidence is high. If we get it right today, we carry that into the final.”

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s men are also back in contention after a 3-1 win over spirited Malawi yesterday.

Head coach Itsanang Abubasutu said the result reset their CAVB Africa Qualifier campaign and put Los Angeles back on the table.

“The Malawi game was must-win and the boys showed character to win 3-1,” Abubasutu said.

“Now it’s Namibia. If we beat them, we get the Zambia rematch we want in tomorrow’s final. The men are back in contention for LA28 and we intend to finish strong.”

Both finals are at Sunrise Sports Club tomorrow with the bottom two sides squaring off in a third-place playoff first for both men and women.
