Mukurumbira to drive AI and Innovation in African Sports via new GSIC role

Kupakwashe Mukurumbira

Zimbabwean sports business leader Kupakwashe Mukurumbira has been appointed as an official Ambassador for the Global Sports Innovation Center (GSIC) powered by Microsoft, in a significant recognition that places a Zimbabwean at the heart of the world's leading sports technology ecosystem.

The appointment, which forms part of the GSIC's relaunched and enhanced Ambassador Program for the 2026 cycle, sees Mukurumbira join an elite network of 25 senior ambassadors drawn from across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific region.

Mukurumbira, a 2019 Mandela Washington Fellow and founder of Dominion Sport, brings a formidable track record to the role. He has trained 345 entrepreneurs and facilitated over $3.4 million in capital for sports ventures, credentials that align squarely with the GSIC's mission of startup acceleration and digital transformation within the global sports industry.

His broader career portfolio is equally impressive. He serves as an Associate Partner at Qantara Sports and World Athletes Recruits, and holds advisory positions with some of the world's most respected safeguarding institutions, including Safe Sport International, the FIFA Foundation, Safe Allies, UNICEF UK and the Council of Europe.

In his ambassadorial role, Mukurumbira will represent GSIC across key African and international markets, foster collaboration between local sports entities, including leagues, clubs and startups, and GSIC's global network of over 500 organisations, while driving artificial intelligence and technology solutions to modernise sports operations across the continent.

"It is an honor to join the GSIC powered by Microsoft as an Ambassador," said Mukurumbira. "I look forward to leveraging this platform to empower sports professionals and integrate innovative technological solutions that will redefine the sports landscape in Africa and beyond."

The GSIC was equally enthusiastic about the calibre of its incoming cohort. "What brings us together is a shared passion for innovation, sport, and entrepreneurship," a GSIC spokesperson said, adding that the program aims to create new opportunities for collaboration, ecosystem development, market access and innovation adoption across key regions worldwide.

For Zimbabwe, Mukurumbira's appointment represents a watershed moment, confirmation that local sports business talent is increasingly being recognised and recruited at the very highest levels of global sports innovation.
