Altin van der Merwe triumphs at FBC Zimbabwe Open

Altin van der Merwe

SOUTH African golfer Altin van der Merwe delivered a clinical final-round performance to capture the 2026 FBC Zimbabwe Open Championship title at Royal Harare Golf Club yesterday.

Finishing with a 4-under-par 68, van der Merwe secured a commanding four-stroke victory with a tournament total of 21-under-par.

Entering the final day with a four-shot cushion, the 29-year-old maintained his composure to secure his first-ever win on the Sunshine Tour.

The victory marks the end of a patient two-year journey since joining the professional ranks.

"I am delighted," van der Merwe said.

"Everybody in my family has been telling me it’s going to come. It’s been two years since I turned pro, and I was wondering when it would happen. I just kept fighting and stayed in the moment. The result speaks for itself."

While van der Merwe pulled away, the battle for the remaining podium spots remained competitive. Australian Austin Bautista finished as runner-up for the second consecutive year, carding a 68 to end at 17-under-par. South Africa's Kyle Barker secured third place at 15-under-par following a final-round 70, while Tyran Snyders recorded the round of the day with a blistering 7-under-par 65 to climb into fourth place at 14-under-par.

Kieran Vincent emerged as the top-placed Zimbabwean. Despite drawing massive crowds with a spirited comeback effort, his final-round 2-under-par left him in a three-way tie for 9th place at 10-under-par overall.

In the amateur ranks, South Africa’s Andries van der Vyver made history, finishing in a tie for 7th at 11-under-par.

This represents the best performance by an amateur since the tournament's relaunch in 2010.

This year’s edition also introduced a new accolade honouring the late golfer Morton Kombai, awarded to the best-performing Zimbabwe-based golfer in the field.

Visitor Mapwanya became the inaugural recipient of the award, finishing tied-41st at 1-under-par.

Other notable local finishers who made the cut included Robson Chinhoi, who ended tied-37th at 2-under-par, as well as Michael Wallace and Darlington Chikanyambidze, who both finished at 4-over-par to share 58th place.
