Chimhini leads FCB Zim Junior Open after Sparkling 67

Munesu Chimhini.

THE opening day of the First Capital Bank (FCB) Zimbabwe Junior Open belonged to 15-year-old rising star Munesu Chimhini, who ignited the home crowd at Borrowdale Brooke Golf Club with a masterful performance.

Chimhini, fresh off a top-five finish at the All-Africa Junior Team Championships in Kenya, carded a brilliant 5-under-par 67 yesterday to claim the outright lead after the first round of the three-day prestigious tournament.

While his opening round gave Zimbabwe the dream start, the leaderboard remains incredibly tight.

The local favourite holds a narrow one-stroke lead over a formidable four-way South African tie for second place.

Craig Colliers, Ruben-Hein Curr, Connor Olfsen, and Alexander Frankel all signed for rounds of 68 (4-under-par), ensuring that the second day will be a high-stakes battle for dominance.

Adding to Zimbabwe’s strong showing, Nathan van Rooyen enjoyed a solid day on the greens, finishing with a 2-under-par 70 to secure sixth position heading into day two.

In the girls’ division, South Africa’s Gia Raad set the pace early.

Raad mirrors the boys’ second-place score with a clinical 4-under-par 68, establishing a two-shot cushion at the top of the leaderboard.

Chasing her is Zimbabwe’s home favorite, Miriam Masiya.

The African Youth Games gold medalist finished the day with a respectable 2-under-par 70.

Masiya carries the weight of history on her shoulders this weekend as she bids to become the first Zimbabwean female to win the title since Margaret Nyamukondiwa claimed the inaugural trophy back in 2022.

As the tournament celebrates its 5th anniversary, the intensity on the course reflects the Belief in Every Swing mantra championed by title sponsors, First Capital Bank.

With 95 golfers from 12 nations vying for World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, the pressure is on to perform.

With the graduation of last year’s champions to the senior ranks, the field is wide open for a new generation of leaders.

If Chimhini and Masiya can maintain their composure over the next 36 holes, Zimbabwe stands a genuine chance of keeping the silverware at home for this milestone edition.

Play resumes this morning at Borrowdale Brooke, where the juniors will look to navigate the challenging layout as the leaderboard begins to take its final shape.
