Champions Scottland stutter in title defense.

Scottland . . . . . . . . (0) 1

Ngezi Platinum Stars . . . . .  (0) 1

It was not supposed to be this hard. But for the second week running, the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions found themselves staring at a mirror and seeing a reflection that looked uncharacteristically human.

Scottland’s title defense, widely expected to be a victory lap, has instead begun with a stutter. Yesterday at Rufaro Stadium, they were held to a pulse-pounding draw by a Ngezi Platinum Stars side that, on paper, should have been easy pickings.

The Mhondoro based side arrived in the capital bruised by a FIFA transfer ban and the exodus of eight key players.

They were the resource-poor cousins facing a Scottland side dripping with talent and investment.

Yet, football is not played on a balance sheet.

From the first whistle, Ngezi played with a swagger that bordered on disrespect.

They moved the ball with a crisp, short-passing rhythm that turned the Rufaro turf into a dance floor.

Marvelous Mukumba and Malvin Gaki both had chances to silence the home crowd early, while Scottland’s Knowledge Musona reminded everyone of his class with a whistling free-kick that just could not find the target.

The game’s first real gasp moment came in the 34th minute.

Moffat Abubakar carved open the Ngezi defense to find Panashe Mutimbanyoka to go one-on-one with the keeper.

The stadium held its breath, but goalkeeper Darlington Musariranwa grew into a giant, blocking the shot with his legs to keep the scores level at the break.

If the first half was a chess match, the second half began with a lightning bolt. Seconds after the restart, Farai Madhanaga let fly a hopeful, long-range effort.

Nelson Chadya, facing his former club, suffered every goalkeeper’s recurring bad dream.

The ball, which should have been a routine gather, fumbled through his hands and trickled through his legs.

It was a moment of pure sporting tragedy that gifted Ngezi a lead they arguably deserved.

Desperate to avoid an embarrassing defeat, Norman Mapeza played his trump cards.

On came Soccer Star of the Year finalist Emmanuel Ziocha and former Warriors posterboy himself, Khama Billiat.

The atmosphere shifted instantly.

Billiat’s first touch—a delicate cushioned header—nearly set up an equalizer for another substitute Terrence Dzvukamanja, but the Ngezi wall held firm.

The pressure finally told in the 72nd minute.

Moses Shidolo went down under a challenge in the box, and the referee pointed to the spot.

What followed was four minutes of chaos as Ngezi players surrounded the official in protest.

When the dust settled, Walter Musona stepped up.

With the cold-blooded composure that runs in the family, he blasted the ball home to restore parity.

Despite losing four points in two games, Mapeza was surprisingly upbeat, refusing to throw his goalkeeper under the bus.

"Everybody could have done better. I don't want to pinpoint individuals. This is about the whole team," Mapeza insisted post-match. "The moment we lost possession, the guys closer to Madhanaga could have closed gim down quickly. Also Chadya could have done better. But this is a team effort. Those things happen in a game of football. We move on."

For Ngezi Platinum Stars, the result moves them to four points from two matches, a dream start for coach Kumbirai Mutiwekuziva given the club's off-field constraints.
