The Hills driving range makes triumphant return

The Hills driving range makes triumphant return

THE Hills Luxury Golf Estate's driving range opened exclusively to platinum members on Friday, marking the first step in reviving one of Zimbabwe’s most iconic golf courses.

Stretching 320 metres in length and over 150 metres wide, it is the largest driving range in Zimbabwe, offering scale, realism, and strategy rarely seen in the region.

Expansive teeing areas cover more than 7 000 square metres, providing players freedom and variety in their practice, while eight sculpted target greens, seeded with premium rye grass, replicate championship-level conditions.

The opening of the driving range signals the rebirth of The Hills, a course that once hosted giants of the game. The project is part of a US$20 million overhaul by WestProp, which includes completing the full 18-hole course.

WestProp chief executive officer Ken Sharpe said the public launch is on track for the end of this month.

“The course is on schedule to be finished by the end of the year. We are almost seven holes in, and the remaining 11 are well on target. By July, more than half of the course will be green, visible, and finished,” Sharpe said.

He added that service infrastructure, including water and sewer systems, is complete, and that land clearance has been done. Construction of the first villas and townhouses will begin next month.

Platinum member Chester Mhende described the golf course as “in a class of its own.”

“I never expected the driving range to be like this. What shocked me was their ability to transplant the baobab and palm trees. This course is going to take a lot of people by surprise,” Mhende said.

Celebrated course architect Peter Matkovich, known for Arabella in South Africa and Leopard Rock in Zimbabwe, is behind the rebirth of The Hills.

Friday’s milestone marks the revival of a legend and promises to redefine golf practice in the country.
