VETERAN forward Ali Sadiki was the toast of the day, as Triangle United FC progressed to the 2025 Chibuku Super Cup first round after edging Kwekwe United 1-0 at Mandava Stadium yesterday.

Sadiki scored the solitary goal of the match after 53 minutes, powering the Lowveld side into the first round of the 2025 Chibuku Super Cup.

They set up a date with Ngezi Platinum Stars on Sunday the Baobab Stadium.

Triangle United FC coach Genesis Mangombe was elated with the result.

He said: “It was a tough game, but we managed to go through. They [Kwekwe United] are not an easy team to play because they play well.

“That goal we got was good because we did not want to go for penalties. Now, we look forward to the first round, but our focus is mainly on the league, where we want to survive relegation.”

His counterpart Masimba Dinyero said they are investing their energy in the remaining league matches of the season.

“It’s obviously disappointing because we play every game to win. We have to move on and wait for the league to resume when we face Dynamos,” the Kwekwe United mentor said.

“For now, we go back to the drawing board and prepare for our next league match against Dynamos.

“At the moment, the youngsters are trying their best to showcase their talent, but there is a lot that happens behind the scenes. Our job is to make sure they develop to become best players in Zimbabwe.”

The two sides were rather cagey in the opening exchanges though, with Munashe Bamara showing glimpses of brilliance in the heart of midfield for Triangle.

For Kwekwe United, roving midfielder Emmanuel Mutimbanyoka was pulling strings, but largely to no avail in the first half.

Notably, the Kwekwe-based side had one glorious chance after 20 minutes, but from close range, Timothy January could not convert the well-worked effort, with the goalkeeper, Takudzwa Chikosi at his mercy.

Nomore Chinyerere came near just after the half hour mark with a rasping shot from range.

However, Kwekwe United goalkeeper Elton Nechiware parried it out for a cornerkick.

As a result, they were deadlocked at half-time, with no goals.

Triangle finally got it right after 53 minutes when Sadiki broke the deadlock, with a fine effort from close range.

Nechiware, the goalie, was left rooted at one spot.
