Zim golf team set for world championship

Zimbabwe’s national golf team has earned a spot in the prestigious World Amateur Team Championship (WATC), set to take place in Singapore from October 8–11.

Zimbabwe’s national golf team has earned a spot in the prestigious World Amateur Team Championship (WATC), set to take place in Singapore from October 8–11.

The team will compete against 35 other nations for the Eisenhower Trophy, marking a significant achievement for the country's amateur golf scene.

Zimbabwe is one of only three African nations to qualify, alongside South Africa and Uganda.

According to Blessmore Gandawa, president of the Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA), this qualification is not by chance but the result of hard work and dedication from the players.

“This is the World Cup for amateur golf and it's the highest level a team can reach,” Gandawa said.Unlike professional golf, where players compete as individuals in tournaments like the US Open, the WATC allows a team of three players to represent their country on the global stage.

The ZGA is sending a team of three players, a coach, and a head of delegation to the championship. Gandawa emphasised that this event is a prime opportunity for local businesses to gain international exposure by sponsoring the team.

“Our qualification presents the local corporate world with an unmatched and unparalleled opportunity to partner with us. We cannot go it alone. We need corporate support so our team can be a marvel to watch,” he said.Inspired by the national rugby team’s recent qualification for the 2027 World Cup, the ZGA hopes to make a strong showing in Singapore.

The team’s best previous finish at the WATC was sixth place, and they are now aiming for a podium finish.

The selection process for the three-man team is already underway, and the final roster will be announced soon.

Head coach Simon Murungweni confirmed that the team will be using advanced technology to study the course layout and terrain in preparation for the competition.
