Dynamos begin Chibuku Cup three-peat quest

Dynamos will embark on an unprecedented journey, a quest to become the first team to win the cup three times in a row

FOR the storied Dynamos, the 2025 season has been a humbling affair.

A team synonymous with success and silverware finds itself in a precarious position, battling for survival in the relegation zone of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

But amidst this struggle, a new chapter is set to be written in the Chibuku Super Cup, a tournament where the Harare giants have reigned supreme for two consecutive seasons.

Today, Dynamos will embark on an unprecedented journey, a quest to become the first team to win the cup three times in a row.

Their journey, however, begins with a stark reminder of their current plight. As a team languishing in the bottom four of the league, Dynamos must start their title defence in the preliminary round—a position typically reserved for struggling sides.

The defending champions will face Yadah in the preliminary round at Ngoni Stadium, a bitter pill to swallow for a club of such pedigree.

The Chibuku Super Cup offers more than just a trophy; it's a chance for redemption.

For a club battling relegation with just 10 matches left in the season, this tournament is an opportunity to salvage some pride and give their long-suffering fans something to cheer about.

“We are running two races at the same time. We want to defend our Chibuku Super Cup and at the same time survive relegation,” interim coach Takesure Chinyama said.

The morale in the camp is high after a much-needed victory over MWOS FC. Chinyama believes his team is ready for the challenge.

“The game has also come at the right time because we are coming from a victory and the morale in the camp is so high, everyone will be ready to fight for the Dynamos badge,” Chinyama said.

The financial incentives of the Chibuku Super Cup are also a significant motivating factor.

The total purse for this year's tournament is US$375 000, with the winner pocketing a handsome US$75 000 and a ticket to represent Zimbabwe at the next Caf Confederation Cup.

For a club like Dynamos, this could be a vital injection of resources.

Chinyama is well aware of the pressure and the opportunity that lies ahead.

“We also have to be cautious because we are the defending champions, we will put everything on the line because we want to defend our title.

“We defended it last year, we would want to defend it again and make history. We are happy that we have no injuries and everyone is ready to go,” he said.

Dynamos’ quest to make history begins today. If they can overcome Yadah, they will face league champions Simba Bhora in the next round.

The path to a three-peat is anything but easy, but for a team desperate for a win and a sense of pride, the Chibuku Super Cup may just be their saving grace.
