Tournament director Mercy Mushangwe.

AT least 500 young chess players from across the country are expected to part in the Under- 8, 10 and 12 Boys and Girls World Cadets Chess Qualifiers Chess Championships at Haig Park Primary School in Harare later this month.

The event is scheduled to take place from June 20-23 in Harare.

All the six winners from the available categories will make it into the Zimbabwe team for the World Cadets Chess Qualifiers Chess Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from September 18 to October 1 this year.

However, medals and prizes will be available for the top three chess players in each category in the qualifiers.

The event will be held under the auspices of the Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF).

“The Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) from June 20 to 22, 2025 at Haig Park Primary School in Harare will be hosting the U8, 10 and 12 Boys and Girls World Cadets Chess Qualifiers Chess Championships,” tournament director Mercy Mushangwe said.

“Six gold medallists from these qualifiers stand a chance to represent Zimbabwe in Almaty, Kazakhstan, from September 18 to October 1 this year.

“We are looking forward to raising the Zimbabwe flag high in Kazakhstan not only looking at chess as a sport but also embracing sports tourism.

“Our children will have the exposure to visit Europe at such tender ages giving them new friendships, an appreciation of diversity, confidence building, resilience and grit.”

She added: “Funds permitting, we look forward to hosting a bootcamp for our representatives and this will help to fine-tune their skills by preparing them under the same tournament conditions in Kazakhstan as well as being geared to be ambassadors of our nation.”
