7 Zim golfers make FBC Zim Open cut

Robson Chinhoi had a brilliant second day in the competition after he shot 4-under par 68 to move into the top 10, tied for seventh place on overall 5-under par 139

SEVEN local golfers will play the 2025 FBC Zim Open into the weekend after they managed to make a cut following the second round of the competition yesterday.

Robson Chinhoi had a brilliant second day in the competition after he shot 4-under par 68 to move into the top 10, tied for seventh place on overall 5-under par 139.

The 34-year-old golfer’s round was made up of an eagle on Hole 16, five birdies and three double bogey.

On the first day, which happened to be his birthday, Chinhoi shot 1-under par 71, which leaves him six strokes behind leader Mexican Luis Carrera, who goes into the weekend on overall 11-under par after shooting a second round 6-under par 66.

Other Zimbabwean golfers to make the cut include Visitor Mapwanya, who carded 71 for the second time in a row to finish on 2-under par for the tournament and a tie for 20th place.

Veteran golfer Ryan Cairns continued with his fairy tale return to the competition after missing last year’s event by also making the cut after managing 1-over par on a challenging afternoon for an overall 1-under par 143, the same as Nyasha Muyambo.

Cairns was happy with his second row performance.

“I was actually very happy with 1-over. It’s not often you’re happy with shooting one over, but my game just didn’t feel like it was all there today,” he said.

“It didn’t feel like it was all there today, I got off to a bit of a bad start. I was a couple over early, so I had to really fight and grind my way back to finish under par for the two days, which I’m very happy with.

“If somebody said that to me at the beginning of the week, that I’d be under par after two rounds, I would have taken it.”

Shaahid Mahmed, Stuart Krog and Tonderai Masunga complete the list of locals making it onto the business end of the Sunshine Tour-sanctioned event.

Krog played a brilliant round of golf, carding an impressive 3-under par 69 on the day to force his way into weekend golf after he started slow on Thursday, where he managed 3-over par.

In the end, a level par for the tournament was enough for him to make the cuts.

Mahmed was also on level par after shooting 1-under par in the second round, while Masunga made the cut by just one stroke after closing the day on overall 1-over.

South African golfer MJ Viljoen goes into the weekend in second place after shooting 66 for an overall 10-under par and with a three stroke cushion over Australian Austin Bautista and compatriots Hennie Otto and Martin Rohwer on 7-under.

None of the 11 amateur golfers were able to make the cut.
