N'ombeyaora, Rangers set early pace in NRSL

The Pedzai "Scott" Sakupwanya-owned side clobbered Harare City 4-0 at Rufaro Stadium on Good Friday to maintain a 100% record in the league and sit at the top of the standings, with six points in two matches.

NORTHERN Region Soccer League (NRSL) outfit N'ombeyaora are enjoying a good start to the season in the second-tier competition after winning their opening matches in the campaign to share top spot with Chinhoyi Rangers.

The Pedzai "Scott" Sakupwanya-owned side clobbered Harare City 4-0 at Rufaro Stadium on Good Friday to maintain a 100% record in the league and sit at the top of the standings, with six points in two matches.

The team kicked off the season with another 4-0 drubbing of PAM FC at The Heart Stadium.

Coached by Nesbert Saruchera, a serial winner of this league, N'ombeyaora are favourites to gain promotion into the topflight league.

Already, the team has charmed owner Sakupwanya with their brand of passing football.

The only other team to win the two matches played so far is Chinhoyi Rangers, who beat local rival Chinhoyi Stars 1-0 in the season opener before producing a 2-0 victory over Zambezi G & C over the weekend.

Rangers are one of the three teams looking to win the NRSL title and bring topflight football to Chinhoyi, along with Oden FC and Chinhoyi Stars.

Five other teams — Ali Sundowns, FC Oden, Black Mambas, MWOS FC Under-19 and Golden Eagles — have four points after recording one win and one draw in the campaign.

The NRSL has expressed excitement with the performance of the league debutants.

"The energy these teams are bringing to the league is electrifying. It's rare to see such an impactful start from promoted sides and it's keeping fans and seasoned clubs on their toes," said NRSL media officer Yemurai Dyakonda.

However, Chegutu Pirates, who were relegated from the Premier Soccer League last year, have had a forgettable start to the season, losing both their matches.

They are coached by legendary coach Moses Chunga, who has won the topflight league championship before.

Another former PSL side, Cranborne Bullets, and Chinhoyi Stars are yet to garner points in the campaign.
