Chahwanda Stadium a game changer: Moyo

Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture ministry permanent secretary Nicholas Moyo

Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture ministry permanent secretary Nicholas Moyo says the Chahwanda Stadium, which is being constructed in Kwekwe, will be a game-changer for the country in terms of sports infrastructure development.

The facility, which is being spearheaded by Yadah FC owner and Zifa aspiring president Walter Magaya has made significant progress since construction began last month.

At the moment, the turf has been installed, with construction of the dressing room and terraces already underway.

The 10 000-seater stadium is expected to be completed by the end of January, with hopes that it can be approved by Caf to host international matches.

"As government, cabinet instructed the Local Government ministry and the Sports ministry to work hand in hand with owners of these facilities," Moyo said.

"Our job is to give support to these private players so that they have the best possible environment to operate in. Our job remains to oversee this progress.

"So this will be a game changer in terms of facilities. All we want to have is an improvement in our infrastructure and ultimately, success in playing.

"Our ministries are here to support private players. So firstly, we came here to appreciate the job being done.

"Secondly, we came here to support them because this is a lot of work. And for us this is an exciting development that we are having a bigger stadium in Kwekwe.

"These are the kind of facilities that we expect to have in Zimbabwe. So as a ministry, we will make sure that we come here to help and check progress at least once in two weeks."
