ON Tuesday, the world celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities BARTMAPH Foundation hosted a wheelchair basketball tournament at Mabvuku Number 1 Grounds, with five teams participating in the tournament.
Teams that participated in the tournament include Richwood, Danhiko, Wolves Boys and Girls and Golden Girls.
This year’s theme for the celebration was Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.
Speaking at the event, Zimbabwe Paralympics president Witness Magulula said sports have the power to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes and promote social change.
“I am happy to welcome the organisers of this event for their tireless efforts in promoting disability sport and creating opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate and excel in various sporting disciplines,” he said.
“To the athletes participating in this event, I salute your determination, resilience and passion for sport. I am pleased to see young athletes in this tournament; they are the future of para-sport in Zimbabwe.”
He added: “As we celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we are united in the importance of creating an inclusive and accessible environment for all individuals, regardless of their abilities.
“We must continue to work together to break down barriers and promote equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. I would like to leave you with a quote from (the late former South African President) Nelson Mandela who said, ‘Sport is the power to change the world’.”
