Zimbabwe has managed to send a strong team made up of the country’s top young golfer at the 2024 R & A Region 5 Golf Challenge which concludes today at Lusaka Golf Club in Zambia.
Eight countries namely South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Malawi, Namibia, Zimbabwe and hosts Zimbabwe are taking part in the event.
The Zimbabwe team is led by 20-year-old Matthew Bramford who emerged as the best amateur golfer at the FBC Zimbabwe Open earlier in the month who joined the team in Zambia from his South Africa base.
Tanaka Chatora (18) is the only survivor from last year’s team which finished second at the event after South Africa while Keegan Shutt (18) and Innocent Mukumba (21) complete the team. All of the golfers in the amateur team took part in the FBC Zimbabwe Open.
Zimbabwe Golf Association (ZGA) vice chairman Stalline Masiya is the head of delegation. Zimbabwe finished second after South Africa comfortably won the competition on 691 points, finishing a massive 63 points ahead while Zambia came third (758) and Malawi fourth (764).
South Africa also dominated the singles strokeplay competition, taking the top three spots with Altin van der Merwe coming first on 139 strokes, following rounds of 69 and 70, while Daniel Bennett came second on 141 (70, 71), Jordan Burnand third on 144 (68, 76) and Michael Wallce of Zimbabwe came fourth on 146.
Only six countries competed in the tournament last year.
