Husband forces wife to accept polygamy

Harare Civil Court

A Harare woman appeared before the Harare Civil Court seeking a peace order against her alleged abusive husband, who was trying to force her to be part of a polygamous relationship.

Mercy Kumbirai accused her husband Patrick Mashikeni of physical and mental abuse after she rejected his plan to marry a second wife.

“He is in the habit of assaulting and insulting me in front of the children, humiliating me, forcing me to accept polygamy,” Kumbirai said in court.

“I told him that l cannot accept polygamy because it is against my beliefs.

“Patrick must stop the behaviour of forcing me to go to bed with him, l am not ready to share a husband with another woman.”

She said her husband must move out of the house instead of bringing another woman to their matrimonial home.

She also accused him of marital rape but Mashikeni accused her of lying.

“I paid lobola to her parents so there is no need for her to deny me intercourse, l have a right to ask for it whenever l need it,” he submitted.
