BINGA South Member of Parliament, Fanuel Cumanzala says villagers in his constituency are walking long distances in search of water which is increasingly becoming scarce in the district.
“Water challenges in Binga will not be resolved through drilling of boreholes only, instead we also want dams to be constructed so that we get enough water. They are just a few boreholes in the area” Cumanzala said.
He said wards 4, 12 and 25 were the hardest hit by water challenges.
A villager from Lubimbi, Pangani Lubimbi, said villagers were being exposed to attacks by wildlife animals as they searched for water several kilometres away from their homes.
Lubimbi said water shortages had also led to some young girls being sexually abused during the search for water.
Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs minister, Richard Moyo promised to engage the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) on the matter.
“I will be engaging Zinwa this coming week because we have arranged meetings with them. That is when I will ask them if they can drill boreholes in Binga South,” said Moyo, while confirming that there were few boreholes in Binga South.
