Plumtree man jailed for donkey theft

A THIRTY-TWO year old man from Plumtree has been sentenced to four years in jail for stealing five donkeys.

The convict, Evidence Moyo from Siyephi village, appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware last week where he admitted taking the animals to support his brick-moulding business, as he only owned a scotch cart.

One year of his sentence was suspended for five years, provided that Moyo does not reoffend.

He will serve an effective three-year term.

Prosecutor Sheila Nyathi said in May, Moyo stole the donkeys from grazing land at Diba village along the Plumtree-Bulawayo road.

He sold one of the donkeys and altered the ear markings of the remaining four.

The complainant, Sipho Khuphe, later identified her donkeys at Moyo’s homestead, where he claimed he needed them for his brick-moulding project.

Police recovered all donkeys, valued at US$550. Moyo was convicted of theft and dishonesty, with no option for a fine
