The late Washington Makora met his fate, 97 metres deep in Midway Syndicate Mine.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the tragic accident.

“We have a case of sudden death of an artisanal miner who was electrocuted in a mine shaft. The incident occurred on 9 June at about 11am,” said Mahoko.

“The now deceased Makora, whose age is yet to be established, had allegedly commenced duty together with four workmates.

“Makora and two others went down the shaft while the other two remained outside monitoring electrical switches.”

Ngonidzashe Gashura (41), who had gone down the shaft with Makora, got out to fix a pump electrical problem.

“Upon returning, he was met with a bout of smoke coming from the shaft. It was discovered that Makora had been electrocuted.”Mahoko said.
