Imbiber ‘slapped’ to death

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele

A 40-YEAR-OLD man from Pumula in Bulawayo died after he was slapped following a misunderstanding over a cellphone at a drinking spot.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident identifying the now deceased as Witness Moyo.

“Moyo was at Pumula East shops drinking beer with his friend a male adult aged 39. He saw the accused person known as Luke Mudenda passing by and he confronted him, demanding his cellphone, which he alleged to have been stolen by Mudenda sometime in April 2025,” Msebele said.

She said Mudenda then hit the now deceased with an open hand once on the face and he fell hitting the ground with the back of his head.

Msebele said Moyo became unconscious before regaining consciousness after about five minutes and was helped by his friend to walk to his place of residence since he was experiencing difficulty in walking.

She said on the following morning his friend went back to check on him.

“He found him lying on his bed, facing up and he was showing some signs of life. He then went back home, cooked some food, took it to the now deceased and tried to feed him but he could not eat.

“He then left and returned at around 11:30 hours and found the now deceased still lying in the same position, tried to wake him up again but without success,” Msebele said.

A police report was made and the body was ferried to United Bulawayo Hospitals mortuary for post-mortem.
