A MAN from Masvingo has been arrested in connection with rape and murder of his sister and niece, respectively.

A MAN from Masvingo has been arrested in connection with rape and murder of his sister and niece, respectively.

The man allegedly told his sister that a prophet had instructed him to sleep with her to cleanse the family of evil spirits.

In a statement, police national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the rape and murder happened on March 1 this year in Makurumidze village in Gutu, Masvingo province.

Nyathi said investigations established that the suspect allegedly visited his sister at their late parents’ homestead in Makurumidze village.

“He allegedly deceived her into believing that a prophet had instructed him to sleep with her to cleanse the family of evil spirits. The suspect then raped the victim twice,” Nyathi said.

He said after committing the offence, the victim threatened to report him to the police.

“The suspect then stabbed the victim to death with a knife and went on to strangle the victim's four-year-old daughter to death after attempting to rape the infant,” Nyathi said.

According to Nyathi, the suspect dumped the infant’s body in a well.

“On March 18, police acted on information received and raided the suspect's homestead at Drawmore Farm, Masvingo, where they apprehended him.

“The suspect also stole a cellphone from the scene, which is yet to be recovered. The knife used in the murder has since been recovered,” he said.
