Zimbabweans based in other countries are helping Tsholotsho villagers construct schools in the district where there is an acute shortage of learning facilities.
Learners from early childhood development level are said to be missing lessons as well because of the long distance they have to travel daily.
Ward 6 councillor, Busani Vundla, said this was also to blame for the poor pass rate as the pupils attend lessons already tired.
“We have so far managed to develop our preschools to good living standards by building toilets and rehabilitating some preschools that were in bad condition,” Vundla said.
He said secondary schools were also located as far as 15 kilometres away from the learners’ homes.
“Our proposal is that we have a school at Zabagwadi, we start off with a primary school followed by a secondary school later,” he said, adding that they were tapping into proceeds from wildlife to build the schools,” Vundla said.
“We have pulled resources together as villagers and also made use of campfire proceeds and with some assistance from the diaspora community to make our dream come true.”
