Mentally challenged woman attempts to kill son

Bulawayo police acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele

A 41-YEAR-OLD mentally-challenged woman from Emganwini high-density suburb in Bulawayo has been arrested on charges of attempting to kill her son.

Bulawayo police acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident.

"On February 5 at 4pm, the complainant's aunt, (64) of Emganwini, Bulawayo, received an anonymous call to the effect that the accused person who is the mother to the boy aged one year eight months was holding the boy by his legs, hitting him against the ground and kicking him on the face. The little boy sustained a swollen eye and a fractured skull," Msebele said.

She said a police report was made leading to the arrest of the woman. The child was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital where he was admitted.

"Investigations revealed that the accused person is said to be abusing drugs and is mentally unstable," Msebele said.

She appealed to members of the public with mentally unstable relatives to monitor them and also provide support to ensure their well-being and the welfare of their children are catered for.
