Matobo boy (7) drowns

A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD boy from Shumbeshava village in Matobo, Matabeleland South, drowned while swimming with other children in Whovy River.

A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD boy from Shumbeshava village in Matobo, Matabeleland South, drowned while swimming with other children in Whovy River.

Matabeleland South acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Stanford Mguni said the matter was under investigation.

“On February 1, five children between the ages of 7 and 15 were swimming in Whovy River. While swimming others went away leaving the now deceased with the other children and when they returned, they discovered that the boy was missing. They searched for him and found him under water,’’ Mguni said.

He said his friends tried to resuscitate him to no avail.

“They decided to take him home but along the way they dumped him at a pond and went away. He was discovered the following day after a search and the matter was reported to police. The body of the boy was taken to United Bulawayo Hospital for post-mortem," said Mguni.

He warned members of the public to monitor their children especially during the rainy season.
