Man strangled in front of son

Police provincial spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele

A 50-YEAR-OLD man from Emganwini suburb in Bulawayo was strangled in front of his son by an unknown assailant they had given a lift at night.

Police provincial spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said they were appealing for information which might lead to the arrest of two unknown male adults who murdered Albert Tshuma.

“On January 21, Tshuma was seated in the front passenger seat while his son was driving a Honda CRV and travelling from Emganwini,” Msebele said.

“Along the way, they were flagged down by a male adult at Zara turn-off and he instructed his son to stop the vehicle.”

She said the accused asked for a lift.

“His son drove for a short distance and he noticed a black BMW with no number plates driving in front of them,” Msebele said.

“The man they had given a lift then produced a small firearm and instructed them to follow the BMW in front of them.”

She said they followed the BMW up to Randun Road, about 2km from St Martins Road Upper Rangemore until their vehicle ran out of fuel.

“The BMW stopped and a male adult disembarked from the driver’s seat. He confronted them about why they had stopped,” Msebele said.

“The suspect then used a seat belt to strangle the now-deceased while pointing his pistol at the driver threatening him not to make any movement.”

“When Tshuma became weak, the accused took a wallet from the dashboard and searched it, but there was no money. Only an ID and driver’s licence were inside,” said Msebele, adding that the suspect then disembarked from Tshuma’s vehicle and joined his accomplices before they drove off.

“A police report was made but the suspects were not located.”

Msebele said the body of the now-deceased was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals for post-mortem.

“We warn people driving their personal motor vehicles not to offer lifts to unknown people, especially during the night so as to avoid such incidents.”
