BLAIR toilets in Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park have started overflowing and spilling waste, with residents appealing for assistance to have proper ablution facilities.
The residents told Southern Eye that they were worried about the health and environmental implications of the overflowing toilets.
One of the affected residents, Laiza Gumbo, said the problem has been going on for weeks and they are facing difficulties when they want to use the toilets.
“It’s actually worse because we are in the rainy season. When it is not raining and the sun is out, it becomes better because the waste goes down a bit,” Gumbo said.
“It is so unfortunate because we haven’t found anyone who will help us and we really need help.”
Another resident said the problem has actually been going on for some years.
“There is a house that we know that has been affected. The Blair toilet is full now and they have not found help so far,” she said.
Meanwhile, ward 15 councillor Ashton Mhlanga said there was need to build other toilets for the affected residents living in unserviced areas.

“Basically, what is needed is digging another toilet because the area is not serviced. It does not have a sewer system,” he said.
“Another solution that can be done is if the affected residents get assistance in terms of getting the bio-digester chemical, which can be put into the Blair toilet so that it can help dissolve the solid waste.”
