CHIEF Hikwa of Bulilima district in Matabeleland South has appealed to well-wishers and other stakeholders for the transportation of food aid from the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) in Plumtree to feed her hungry subjects reeling from the effects of the El Niño-induced drought.
The government is in the process of distributing food aid to areas severely affected by the drought.
In an interview yesterday, Chief Hikwa told Southern Eye that their grain allocation had been delivered at Plumtree GMB, but there was no transport to ferry it to the Dombodema area.
“Our fear is that we will end up losing our allocation to other places that are also in need,’’ Chief Hikwa said.
She, however, said the grain allocation was not enough to feed all the villagers, adding that those who came late for collection might lose out.
“This is not the first time we have received food aid, in September, we received wheat but village heads ended up contributing funds to pay for transport to ferry the grain to wards.
“The last time we got a fuel coupon from our local MP Dingumuzi (Phuti) to go and collect the food aid but when we got it we found that our allocation had been redirected to other deserving areas,” she said.
The traditional leader said the most affected were the elderly and children, adding that it was difficult for one to ask for contributions from such groups.
