TWO men from Mgombane village in Jolotsho died after inhaling methane gas fumes while deepening a 25-metre well last week

Bulawayo City Council acting chief fire officer Mhlangano Moyo confirmed the incident.

Moyo urged villagers to engage specialists when they want to sink wells to avoid being choked to death by the underground methane gases.

“We need to warn the community of Lupane and Jotsholo areas that the area has methane gas underground, hence it's risky to carry out such operations,” Moyo said.

“This is the fourth incident in that area with the same predicament.”

Moyo said the Hwange Fire Brigade failed to rescue the duo, and sought help from Bulawayo.

According to Moyo, about seven people have been choked to death by the methane gas fume underground in recent months.

Matabeleland North acting police spokesperson Namatirai Mashona said they were yet to receive information
